Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devil's Postpile National Monument protects and preserves the Devil's Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display as unusual symmetry. In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese American Citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. The Railroad Museum features the original railroad depot that formerly served the railroad community of Laws. Actually, the town of Laws is re-created as a railroad town of yesteryear and is replete with original homes, a trading post, a general store and a post office among other buildings that give this a realistic feel. Inyo National Forest is located between US Highway 6 and US Highway 395 extending 165 miles between the towns of Inyokern and Lee Vining. The forest features Mount Whitney, the highest point the continental United States.

Don't miss the Petroglyphs of the Volcanic Tablelands, they are all over the place, specifically the area immediately north of Bishop that lies between Hwy 395 and Hwy 6, extending about 20 miles toward Crowley lake at the southern edge of the Long Valley Caldera. Mono Lake features a preservation of tufa, which is a calcium-carbonate rock that is formed by the interaction of freshwater springs under the lake with the alkaline lake waters. The lake is located in Lee Vining, 64 miles northwest of our Bishop property.
