In December 2016, Vagabond Inn Corporation completed its transition to its new distribution platform, Windsurfer® CRS by SHR, a leading provider of hospitality distribution technology.

Vagabond Inn Corporation spent the 9-month transition process working with each individual Vagabond Inn hotel to ensure all locations had a seamless experience. One key driving force in the company’s decision to partner with SHR and implement Windsurfer was the platform’s mobile responsive booking engine.

“We are extremely happy with the look, feel, and most importantly, performance of the mobile booking engine provided through Windsurfer,” said Kyle Lee, Vice President of Marketing for Vagabond Inn Corporation.

Prior to the transition, Vagabond Inn Corp’s mobile bookings did not reflect the steady year-after-year increase that the company saw in mobile traffic and visitors. After completing its first conversion of a hotel to the Windsurfer booking engine in April 2016, the company saw immediate results, and recognized the potential Windsurfer had for the whole brand. With all Vagabond Inn locations active on the new booking engine at the start of 2017, Vagabond Inn Corp. has seen vast year-over-year improvements to its mobile metrics.

In comparing the first four months of 2017 to the same period in 2016, Vagabond Inn found a 41% increase in mobile sessions, a 35% increase in average time spent on mobile pages, and a 1606% increase in booked revenue from mobile devices.

Thinking about a road trip? Let's go beyond Google Maps! These apps help you avoid potential road trip pitfalls. They can take your road trip from good to great—or, maybe more importantly, rescue it from total disaster.

1) GasBuddy—

 

If you've ever been out and about on a road trip, you know to avoid running below a quarter tank. GasBuddy helps you out with that by helping you out by locating gas stations near you and updating their prices in real time. Find the cheapest option before you buy from the more expensive one down the street.

 

2) Venmo—

 

Road tripping with a group, or even just one other person, usually means a lot of cash shuffling. Pay your buddies back immediately (and get them to do the same) with Venmo, the go-to digital wallet. There's no cash-out minimum, you can use it to "bill" people as well as pay them, and because it always requires you to include a note about what the payment is for, you'll never lose track of who was paid back for what and when.

 

3) Lazors (Or any other offline gaming app) –

 

Let's be honest: at some point, if your road trip is more than three hours, you're going to be tempted to avoid the social component of it. Sadly, your usual game apps aren't going to be a safe bet. Even if you're lucky enough to get steady service between point A and point B, the worry over data charges will make the whole thing more frustrating than fun. 5) Stitcher—

 

Stitcher is a podcast app. Online capabilities include essentially every major podcast you can imagine. It also lets you download podcasts for offline listening, so you don't burn through your data plan. The world of podcasts is basically like TV—there are constantly new episodes, and there's a show for everyone. You're bound to find something to listen to with even the pickiest types.

6) Pin-dropping function, various navigation apps—

 

Google Maps and Apple Maps both allow users to "drop a pin" at specific locations. It's a huge help in unfamiliar locations. The biggest use for road trips is dropping a pin where you're parked. 8) Giant Paper Cup

No, it's not paper. This concrete sculpture stands outside what was once a paper cup company's building, and for something so large, it sure is inoffensively bland. Take a quick detour off of the Riverside Freeway onto East Citrus Street to see it.

6) Giant Black Olive

This giant olive stands outside what used to be the Olive Tree Inn in Lindsay, CA. There are conflicting stories about where it used to be before it was moved there—probably a processing plant or a growers' co-op. In any case, it's waiting right off of Highway 65 North for anyone who feels the need to take selfies with it and make jokes about looking for a giant pizza, next.

5) Giant Artichoke

11261 Merritt St., Castroville, California 95012

Castroville's giant artichoke is sandwiched innocuously between two buildings in a strip mall just off of the 156. It's... a giant artichoke. Next door is a restaurant that sells deep-fried artichokes, which sounds worth a visit in and of itself.

4) Giant Lemon

You have to hand it to Lemon Grove. They went bold with this ten-foot-long fiberglass lemon just off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway. Not only is it, you know, a massive fiberglass lemon: its base is inscribed with "THE BEST CLIMATE ON EARTH." That's a type of positivity you can get behind.

3) Giant Chicken(s)

Giant chickens roost all over California. Our favorite lives at Windmill Farms, Arroyo Grande, CA. Farm visitors can check out real chickens—plus goats, specialty foods, and a whole lot more—in addition to the sculpture. (Runner-up makes its home on top of a private residence in Mentone, CA that's well-known for being covered with all sorts of unusual sculptures, including a Statue of Liberty head and a massive muffler man.)

2) The Giant Fork-In-The-Road

Pasadena Ave & S St John Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105

The fork in the road in Pasadena, CA is just a 5-minute drive from Historic Route 66 and another 5 from the intersection of the Ventura Freeway and the San Diego Freeway. In 2009, artist Ken Marshall got away with installing it in broad daylight despite having no permission to do so—he simply wore a CalTrans uniform and acted confident about it. The city took the sculpture down in 2010 and reinstalled it in 2011, after permits were secured.

1) The Giant Steer of Buttonwillow

Highway 58 and Hugo Street, Buttonwillow, California 93206

Opening a new location in Buttonwillow, along California's historic I-5, is why we've been thinking about giant highway attractions in the first place. Buttonwillow is best known for its racing park, Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Arguably, though, it's the giant steer of Buttonwillow who offers visitors best photo-op in town.

Located right off of California's central I-5 highway, the sweet-faced steer gives the rest of these giant sculptures a run for their money in terms of accessibility and beats them all in terms of cuteness. (It's so large! The fence around it is so small!)

Plus, since it's not located on an island in the middle of a street (looking at you, fork-in-the-road), you'll have ample opportunity to make a fool of yourself trying to get the best possible picture with it.

We changed the paint completely, but we kept the kitschy HOTEL sign. Now, the outside of the building catches your eye without disrupting the close, community-oriented feel of the surrounding area:

In the old king suites, everything looked a little stale. Now, color-coordinated décor and comfortable, neutral furniture keep things fresh:

 

Multi-bed rooms in the hotel used to be somewhat cramped. Since the redesign, they've gained a more open, airy feel, thanks to cream walls and blue accents:

 

The updated bathrooms, with stainless steel fixtures, soft lighting, and green accent walls, feel cleaner and more inviting. Always a good thing!

 

And, finally, the new outdoor pool and lounge area provides a space where guests can relax and play: 

 

A series of renovations and upgrades to the interior and exterior of the San Jose Vagabond Inn property (located at 1488 N 1st St, San Jose, CA 95112) are now complete.

The upgrades made to the hotel were chosen with high guest impact in mind. For instance, additions to guest bathrooms such as granite countertops strongly improved their overall look and feel.

 

 

 

In guest rooms, new pillows and new bedding provide all guests with an improved sleep experience. They also keep guests comfortable while they enjoy the hotel's new, wall-mounted 39" televisions. The TVs are equipped with a 51 channel DirecTV package that includes HBO and Showtime.

Breakfast amenities at the hotel have also improved. The meal, which is still provided free of charge to hotel guests, now includes 2 types of tea, 2 types of cereal, 8 types of coffee (via a Nescafe Alegria machine), 4 types of juice, 4 types of muffin, 4 types of pastry, 2 types of fruit, and yogurt.

 

 

 

5. Tour a 12,000-year-old historical site

The Maturango Museum offers tours of the actual Coso Rock Art District (inside Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake) over these 2 days. These exclusive tours require a lot of planning—nabbing one during the Festival is one of your best chances for catching a rare glimpse of this incredible canyon.

The most popular National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, covers 522,000 acres and part of the North Carolina-Tennessee border. It pulls in more than 10 million visitors annually, which means people have thoroughly mapped it – and that means that you can plan out your trip to your obsessive heart’s desire.

If you want an extremely chill vacay: Craters of the Moon (Idaho)

Okay, technically it’s a National Monument and a national preserve, not a National Park, but still – this grassland and volcanic landscape is tremendously relaxed. NPS.gov notes that the place has “a violent past, calm present, and uncertain future.” Eventually, it’s supposed to erupt again, but for now, it’s a mild place with new, well-paved roads. The green grasslands have very few trees, so you can see for miles. The lava fields are covered in strange, fascinating formations. It’s also a dark sky territory, meaning you’ll see zero light pollution and tons of stars.

If you just want to get extreme: Gates of the Arctic (Alaska) & Death Valley National Park (California and Nevada)

Extreme cold? Try Gates of the Arctic. Yellowstone technically gets colder all-around temperatures, but Gates of the Arctic is the northernmost National Park there is. Plus, there are zero trails or roads in the entire park.

Extreme heat? Try Death Valley. Despite tons of sun, it’s fairly spooky. The harsh, isolated conditions make long-term survival tough – hence the name.

If you seek saltwater: Dry Tortugas National Park (Florida)

The seven islands of the Dry Tortugas are pretty picturesque, even for the Gulf of Mexico. Well-preserved coral reefs mean good scuba diving. Plus, there’s a touch of architectural and military history at Fort Jefferson, which is part of the park.

If you're looking to find fresh water: Isle Royale National Park (Michigan)

Lake Superior’s Isle Royale is just one part of Isle Royale National Park, which covers a significant amount of the surrounding water and over 450 (not a typo!) other small islands. Some of those islands even have lakes that contain other islands. Like the Dry Tortugas, this National Park houses scenic natural surroundings and tons of wildlife.

If you prefer dry over damp: Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona)

Death Valley National Park is the driest National Park by many standards. If you don’t relish the idea of spending your vacation time at a place called Death, you can check out Grand Canyon National Park, which is greener, gets occasional snow, and has breathtaking views from above and within the canyons.

Hopefully, by now, you have a good idea about where to go. If you still really don't know, consider two last resorts. There's this Buzzfeed quiz, which essentially generates a random park for you. A real daredevil can also just pick a park at random on the National Parks website. Narrow it down here by state first, then close your eyes and scroll. Good luck!

Amazingly enough, some don't even touch the coast – there's tons to see all over the state without even a dip in the Pacific Ocean.

We also mentioned last week that we've been grooving on year-round summery destinations like Palm Springs. To maximize the chill vibe in hot heat, this trip would begin and end in the sunny, swimming pool-filled city.

Next: Joshua Tree or Mojave National Preserve

The desert season is drawing to a close, sort of – hot, dry places like the Mojave can actually attract a ton of international visitors during the really hot months, especially at the beginning and end of the summer. The big advantage there is that you can meet a ton of cool new people from all around the world.

After that: Las Vegas

Road trips can be so fun because your vacation can switch up every day. In pure fantasyland, this is a month-long trip, with half a week in each place. Even if you can only do one night in each area (or less, if you're really booking it), going from the great outdoors to Vegas helps people appreciate both of them.

Again, after the bright lights (and light pollution) of Las Vegas, the isolation and starlight in Grand Canyon National Park will really stand out.

Stopping by: Lake Havasu

Assuming we'd covered ourselves in sunscreen over the past four stops, it would be cool (literally) to move on to man-made Lake Havasu. The majesty of the Grand Canyon can't be beat, but Lake Havasu makes for a splashy break.

Back to California: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

If man-made Lake Havasu left us missing the Grand Canyon, we'd head out next to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The largest state park in California is dry, but if you look closely, it's surprisingly full of life, from cacti in bloom to bighorn sheep to golden eagles.

After all of that driving, making it back to Palm Springs feels like coming home. (And a pool and a reliable, air-conditioned hotel room is very welcome, too.)

Sunday morning join them on the 8th Annual Reliability Run. Starting with a 9am meet up at Plaza Park in Downtown, they will then cruise along the coast and through the beautiful back roads of Ventura, around Lake Casitas, and down thru Ojai. The cruise ends at Noble Fabrication for the annual ’Endless Summer Gathering’.  They will also be adding a 2nd destination which will be held at the ‘Murphy Auto Museum’ in Oxnard hosted by The Daily Driver Project and Fireball Tim. Our highest priority is to ensure our hotels are a safe and clean place for anyone visiting our cities. We want our guests to be able to book a reservation with confidence and trust that the hotel has taken every precaution. Our guest rooms are deep cleaned with an added focus on disinfecting high touchpoints such as light switches, door knobs and locks, tv remote, phone, hard surfaces and bathrooms. Bed linens are disinfected and washed with hot water and dry settings.  

We have implemented frequent disinfecting of all lobby surfaces such as doors, desk, computer devices and credit card machines. Room keys are cleaned with disinfectant wipes before given to a guest checking in. Hand sanitizer will be readily visible and available in the lobby.  

Our employees follow the CDC’s recommendations including frequent washing of their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and they are also told to stay home if feeling sick.  

Keep in mind that many of our locations are exterior corridor properties which pose some advantages in reducing exposure since guests may drive up to their room and avoid contact with heavy trafficked interior touchpoints.
